About the Artwork:

The Abandoned Portal Spaceship is an original painting inspired by Rick's spaceship from Rick and Morty, reimagined through my Abandoned Collection as a battered homemade spacecraft left to decay in the middle of nowhere.

The door has been torn away. One of the tires is missing. Graffiti covers what remains of the body, and empty beet cans spill from the interior onto the ground below. In the distance, telephone poles lean toward the earth as if the rest of the world has slowly begun collapsing with it. Whatever happened here happened a long time ago. 

There's something almost absurd about seeing a machine capable of traveling across the universe abandoned on the side of a road.

Rick can go practically anywhere. Other planets, other dimensions, entire realities completely different than his own... If one world becomes unbearable, there is always another on waiting. Very few characters have ever possessed more freedom to leave.

But maybe being able to leave isn't the same as being free.

I think human beings have always been remarkable good at finding ways to escape themselves. Some of us work constantly. Some drink. Some use drugs. Some chase money, sex, attention, achievement, entertainment, relationships, or the next great adventure. We change jobs. We change cities. We change partners. We reinvent ourselves. We convince ourselves that whatever we're feeling might disappear if we can just get far enough away from where we felt it. 

Most of us can't travel to another dimension... but we find our own sort of portals to escape through.

Maybe that's what the beer cans spilling out of this abandoned spaceship make me think about. For all the impossible places that machine could reach, it could never take the person sitting inside of it somewhere he didn't have to be himself.

You can cross the universe and bring your pain with you.

You can discover things nobody else understands, become smarter than everyone around you, convince yourself that nothing matters, and build enough armor around your emotions that nobody can get close enough to hurt you... None of those things necessarily heal whatever made you want to escape in the first place.

Eventually, you have to land somewhere. 

Maybe this is what happens when the escaping finally stops. The machine is broken. The alcohol is all gone. Nature is starting to reclaim something that once felt almost impossibly powerful.

And maybe that's the tragedy hidden inside all that freedom: there can always be another destination without there ever being a home.

In this painting, time as maybe finally stopped moving and started to take its natural course. This one feels less like imagining what happens after an adventure and more like imagining what remains after someone finally runs out of places to escape to.

I don't see the broken spaceship as the saddest thing in the painting... The saddest thing is how far it could travel.

Because distance can change your surroundings. It can introduce you to new people, new experiences, new worlds, and entirely new ways of seeing things. Sometimes leaving is exactly what saves us.

Eventually every escape has a destination. 

No matter how far we travel, sooner or later we arrive there with ourselves.

I created this series to reconnect with my inner child. It’s nice to take a second to remember the things I loved when I was younger... Nothing lasts forever, so appreciate things before they’re gone! I hope this collection will help you in a similar way.
