About the Artwork:

The Abandoned Red Bicycle is an original painting inspired by Pee-wee Herman's iconic bicycle from Pee-wee's Big Adventure, created shortly after the death of Paul Reubens and reimagined through my Abandoned Collection as a beloved childhood object left behind after its final ride.

I painted this one differently... Paul Reubens had just passed away.

And suddenly, an object that had always represented something playful, ridiculous, colorful, and alive felt different to me.

So I imagined the bicycle without him.. abandoned, weathered, sitting somewhere it was never meant to stay.

For anyone who grew up with Pee-wee Herman, it's difficult to separate this bicycle from the person riding it. It wasn't simply transportation... it was exaggerated, strange, theatrical, completely impractical, and unmistakably his.

Maybe that's why imagining it abandoned feels so much like imagining someone's absence.

The bicycle is still here... but the person who gave it meaning isn't.

Death has a strange way of doing that to ordinary objects. A shirt becomes more than just a shirt... a handwritten note becomes something you could never throw away... a chair becomes the place someone used to sit... an old photograph suddenly becomes priceless...

The object hasn't changed at all... our relationship to it has.

Maybe that's one of the ways people remain with us. They leave pieces of themselves inside the things we associate with them... their work, their voice, their handwriting, their jokes, the character they created, the things they loved, the things they made us love.

My Abandoned Collection usually imagines time reaching fictional worlds that our memories have kept frozen... but with this painting, time had already reached ours.

Paul was gone. 

So instead of imagining what might someday happen, I was responding to something that already had. I left the bicycle behind. Not because what it represented had been forgotten, but because it hadn't.

Maybe that's the contradiction inside of memorials... we create something to acknowledge that a person is gone because some part of us refuses to completely let them go. 

Something created during a lifetime can continue to travel long after the person who created it is gone.

This painting is my small thank you to Paul for leaving something behind.
