About the Artwork:
The Abandoned General Car is an original painting inspired by the iconic General Lee from The Dukes of Hazzard, reimagined through my Abandoned Collection as a forgotten car left deteriorating in a graffiti-covered alleyway.
Unlike many pieces in this collection, the abandonment of this car became an opportunity to explore something larger than nostalgia.
The General Lee occupies a complicated place in American popular culture. For many, it represents a beloved television show, childhood memories, and one of the most recognizable cars ever put on television. At the same time, the Confederate imagery associated with the car carries a very different and painful historical meaning.
Rather than attempt to erase either side of that tension, I wanted the environment surrounding the abandoned car to acknowledge it.
Across the alley are symbols and messages connected to humanity, equality, love, protest, and civil rights...including a portriat of Martin Luther King Jr., the word "HUMAN" the word "LOVE", and "BLM" painted across the car itself.
My intention with this painting is not to declare The Dukes of Hazzard or the people who love it racist, nor was it to ignore the history represented by some of its imagery. I was interested in documenting the uncomfortable space where nostalgia, history, culture, and changing human values collide.
The car remains recognizable...
The history remains complicated...
And the graffiti surrounding it becomes another generation leaving its own marks behind.
I don't believe art always needs to resolve these contradictions. Sometimes its purpose is simply to place them beside one another and allow us to look.
The Abandoned General is an independent artistic interpretation and is not affiliated with, sponsored by, or endorsed by The Dukes of Hazzard or its respective rights holders.
I created this series to reconnect with my inner child. It’s nice to take a second to remember the things I loved when I was younger... Nothing lasts forever, so appreciate things before they’re gone! I hope this collection will help you in a similar way.
