About the Artwork:

The Abandoned Time Machine is an original painting inspired by the DeLorean time machine from Back to the Future, reimagined through my Abandoned Collection as a machine once capable of traveling through time, now left behind with nowhere else to go.

There are few fantasies more human that wanting to go back.

We replay conversations and imagine saying something different. we think about opportunities we missed, mistakes we made, people we hurt, and people we lost. Sometimes we don't even want to change anything. We'd just like to return for five minutes and experience something again while knowing how much it would someday mean to us.

The DeLorean makes that impossible desire feel almost reachable. Get the machine moving fast enough, choose a date, and suddenly the past isn't gone anymore.

This painting imagines that machine lost in time. The doors are open, but the engine wont start anymore. The destination can still be entered, but there is no way to get there. For perhaps the first time, the only direction left is forward.

Maybe that's where most of us eventually have to arrive.

The past can teach us. We can apologize for it, forgive it, learn from it, and carry pieces of it with us... but we can't live there. If we spend our lives wishing we could rewrite everything that hurt us, we may overlook the uncomfortable truth that those experiences also helped create the person standing here now. 

Maybe we don't need a time machine. Maybe we need to make peace with the fact that we don't have one.

Like many of the paintings in my Abandoned Collection, this piece allows time to reach something that our memories have always kept preserved. There's a strange contradiction in watching time finally destroy a machine that once seemed capable of defeating it. 

Eventually, even the time machine becomes part of the past.

We can't go back... but as long as we're here, we still get to let the pass guide us forward into the future.
