He loved being there.

He took pride in his work, ared deeply about what he made, and somehow found genuine excitement in returning to the same kitchen and doing the same thing over and over again.

Squidward, of course, felt very differently. To him, it was somewhere he had to be.

And to Mr. Krabs, it was a business... something built to survive, serve customers, and hopefully make a little money along the way.

Three people could walk through the same doors every morning and experience the exact same place completely differently. Maybe that's what makes this one feel strangely human.

My painting imagines the restaurant after the final shift... The grill is cold, the register is empty, the tables haven't been cleaned in years, there are no customers waiting, no orders coming through the window, no irritated cashier behind the counter, and nobody in the kitchen excited to make one more burger.

The place that once seemed permanently open for business has finally closed its doors.

Like much of my Abandoned Collection, this painting takes a place that never seemed to get old and let it fall deep into the passage of time...

But this one also makes me think about the places where we spend our lives working.

Restaurants close... businesses disappear... coworkers move on... someone eventually works their final shift without realizing it will be their last... and years later, a building that once contained thousands of ordinary days can sit completely empty but full of memories. It feels like we lost something deep all the sudden...

Maybe the strange thing about work is that while we're living it, so much of it can feel repetitive... Clock in. Do the work. Talk to the same people. Clean up. Go home. Come back tomorrow.

But eventually there is no tomorrow, and suddenly those ordinary days become memories. That's probably why SpongeBob's ridiculous enthusiasm for his job feels a little different when you look at it as an adult. He didn't need an extraordinary life to find meaning in what he was doing. He brought meaning to the ordinary things he did every day.

SpongeBob found meaning while he was there... while a lot of us don't find that meaning til it becomes a memory.

The Abandoned Underwater Restaurant is an independent artistic interpretation inspired by the Krusty Krab from SpongeBob SquarePants and is not affiliated with, sponsored by, or endorsed by Nickelodeon, SpongeBob SquarePants, or its respective rights holders.

I created this series to reconnect with my inner child. It’s nice to take a second to remember the things I loved when I was younger... Nothing lasts forever, so appreciate things before they’re gone! I hope this collection will help you in a similar way.

Print Details

Unframed

8 × 10 inches

Free shipping within the U.S.

International shipping costs are calculated at checkout

Thank you for supporting our family and helping independent art thrive

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0814/9840/7164/files/The_Abandoned_Underwater_Restaurant_._8x10_._Prodigi.jpg?v=1788472135
