They have rules, schedules, responsibilities, jobs, bills, betimes, and an endless list of reasons why you can't do whatever they truly want to do...\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSo children create worlds of their own.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA bedroom becomes a command center... a bicycle becomes a gateway vehicle... a cardboard tube becomes a weapon... and a treehouse becomes the headquarters. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn Codename: Kids Next Door, that idea became enormous.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Sector V treehouse wasn't simply somewhere Numbuh 1, Numbuh 2, Numbuh 3, Numbuh 4, and Numbuh 5 went to play... it was their base, their workplace, their fortress, and their world. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt was a place built by children for children, where the problems kids cared about were treated as though they were the most important problems in the universe... because when you're a child, they are. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn this painting a lot of time has passed...\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe missions have stopped, the communication systems have gone silent, nobody is climbing up into the treehouse anymore... and the enormous structure that once contained an entire secret world has been left behind.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEventually, every kid grows up... unfortunately. And thats what makes abandoning this particular place feel different...\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn the world of Kids Next Door, growing older isn't simply something that happens... its something to fear. Operatives eventually become too old for the organization. Childhood has an expiration date, and the world they fought so hard to protect eventually becomes a world they're expected to leave behind.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMaybe that's why the idea feel different when you watch it as an adult, because eventually we all get decommissioned from childhood.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNobody tells us when it happens... there's no ceremony... no final meeting... no announcement that today is the last day....\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe simply begin carrying different responsibilities. We stop building forts or forming secret organizations. We stop knocking on our friends doors and asking if they can come outside... and somewhere along the way, we become the adults we once thought could never possibly understand us.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLike much of my Abandoned Collection does, this painting has taken something dear to us and subjected it to time. Something we all wish we could have preserved forever.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBut maybe the treehouse isn't really the thing that was abandoned... Maybe it was a version of ourselves... The kid who turned scraps of wood into headquarters. The kid who could turn the neighborhood into an entire universe. The kid who believed whatever adventure was happening that afternoon was genuinely important. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLet's face it, growing older is inevitable... but abandoning that kid isn't.
