Inside it was something much stranger...

Arnold lived there with his grandparents and an unusual collection of people who weren't related to one another, didn't always understand each other, and certainly weren't anything resembling a traditional family... but somehow they became one anyway.

The building was crowded with different personalities, different histories, arguments, laughter, strange conversations, meals, neighbors coming and going, and ordinary moments happening beneath the same roof.

Above all of it was Arnold's bedroom... a little sanctuary beneath the city sky where a kid could lie awake, look through the glass ceiling, listen to music, think about life, and try to understand the complicated world around him.

My painting imagines this boarding house lost in time.

The rooms are empty now... the windows are dark and boarded up... Arnold's bedroom sits untouched above it all.

The people who once filled the building with life have gone somewhere else, and the old house that somehow held all of them together is finally falling apart from being left behind.

There's something particularly sad about an abandoned home that once belonged to so many different people. Because eventually we learn that home isn't really a building... it's the people inside of it. The familiar voices... the strange little routines we barely notice until they're gone.

Like much of my Abandoned Collection, this illustration allows time to reach into something that was never meant to grow old.

Eventually, people move away. Children grow up. Grandparents get older. Neighbors disappear. Rooms that once belonged to someone become completely empty... and the places that seemed like permanent fixtures of our lives quietly become places we used to live.

Maybe that's why an abandoned house can feel so haunting yet so beautiful. The walls are still there... the rooms are still there... the windows are still there... well mostly...

But its everyone who made them matter that is missing. Everyone that gave the place life and made it a home.

The Abandoned Boarding House is an independent artistic interpretation inspired by the Sunset Arms boarding house from Hey Arnold! and is not affiliated with, sponsored by, or endorsed by Nickelodeon, Hey Arnold! or its respective rights holders.

I created this series to reconnect with my inner child. It’s nice to take a second to remember the things I loved when I was younger... Nothing lasts forever, so appreciate things before they’re gone! I hope this collection will help you in a similar way.

Print Details

Unframed

8 × 10 inches

Free shipping within the U.S.

International shipping costs are calculated at checkout

Thank you for supporting our family and helping independent art thrive

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0814/9840/7164/files/The_Abandoned_Boarding_House_._8x10_._Prodigi.jpg?v=1788472122
