A makeshift flag hangs from the side of the van made from Shaggy's tattered shirt with three letters graffitied across it: \"SOS\"\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAround the van are items that belonged to the people that once traveled inside it. A pair of glasses... a scarf... an ascot... a slipper... a magnifying glass... even an old collar remains chained to the front bumper of the van with an old bone laying on the ground beside it. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBut everyone is gone.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat's what makes this painting feel different to me. Scooby-Doo was always built around the promise that eventually the mystery would be solved. There were clues to follow, suspects to question, monsters to unmask... No matter how strange things became, by the end of the story we understood what happened.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis time, there is nobody left to pull off the mask. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMaybe the van broke down. Maybe the gang went looking for help. Maybe the bullet holes tell us something worse happened. Someone survived long enough to make the SOS flag and leave one final \"ZOINKS!\" across the side of the van.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAfter that, we don't know... and honestly the mystery is sometimes the best part.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe spend so much of our lives looking for explanations. We want to know why people leave, why terrible things happen, why relationships end, why certain chapters of our lives unfolded the way they did. We search through the evidence because some part of us believe that understanding what happened might finally give us peace.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eUnfortunately, life doesn't always give us the answers. Sometimes the clues are all that's left.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLike many of the paintings in my Abandoned Collection, this painting took a world that has been preserved in our imagination and lost it deep in the passage of time. For a group that spent their lives solving mysteries, I liked imagining one final case they couldn't explain for us.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMaybe some mysteries are better off unsolved. The kind of place you could pass a thousand times without wondering much about the people inside.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBut inside those walls was an entire universe of absurdity.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMaybe that's true of more houses than we realize.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe spend our lives passing homes filled with people we'll never know. Behind every window are inside jokes, arguments, embarrassing stories, celebrations, losses, routines, and memories that mean absolutely nothing to the rest of the world and almost everything to the people who lived them. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis painting imagines this iconic house abandoned and lost in time... long after all of that noise has finally stopped. Nobody is sitting on the couch. Nobody is arguing at the kitchen table. The television isn't playing. The family is gone. Rust and vegetation have slowly taken over the body, while masks, weapons, pizza, and pieces of another life remain scattered across the ground. Even a broken canister of green mutagen has been abandoned in the dirt. Whatever happened to the brothers who once traveled together, nobody came back for their things.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Ninja Turtles were outsiders in almost every possible way. They lived beneath a world they couldn't completely belong to, hiding what they were from people who might never understand them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBut they had each other.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMaybe that's one of the beautiful things about family. Sometimes belonging isn't about finally convincing the entire world to accept you. Sometimes it's finding a few people around whom you don't have to explain why you're different.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis painting imagines the Party Wagon long after that little family stopped pilling inside. The pizza is gone and cold. The weapons have rusted. The masks that once distinguished one brother from another are lying empty on the ground.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere's something especially sad about an abandoned vehicle that once carried everyone together. Eventually, even the closest people can find themselves traveling in different directions. Families change. Friends move away. Brothers grow older. The entrance has been boarded shut with \"KEEP OUT\" tagged across it. Trash and graffiti have overtaken the property, the FOR SALE sign has collapsed into the yard, and an old fry cook's hat has been left behind. Near the top of the house, a familiar red outline of Squidward's head has been graffitied onto the building, complete with an arrow and one cruel word: \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\"LOSER\"\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSquidward is a strange character to grow up with. As children, many of us saw him as the miserable adult who couldn't appreciate how much fin everyone else was having. Then we got older and started understanding him a little more than we expected to.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHe wanted to be an artist. He wanted his work to matter. He wanted recognition, beauty, peace, and some evidence that his life might eventually become larger than the job he hated going to every day. There's something painfully human about wanting more from your life while slowly becoming afraid that more might never come.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMaybe that's why the word \"LOSER\" feels different here.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt's easy for disappointment to become identity. A failed dream becomes I'm a failure. A painting nobody appreciates becomes I'm not an artist. Someone else's success becomes evidence that we're falling behind. Eventually, we can become so accustomed to judging ourselves that we start vandalizing our own sense of worth before anybody else gets the opportunity. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn this painting, I imagined Squidward's home after all of that has gone quiet. The job is over. The neighbors are gone. Nobody is interrupting his afternoon anymore. Even one of his self-portraits has survived as graffiti on the side of the abandoned building... a subtle tribute to his legacy.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMaybe Squidward was never the loser... The jellyfishing net represent the things he did simply because they mad him happy. The tie and hat are pieces of the character we instantly recognize. The object themselves were never what mattered. Maybe the final player was never eliminated. Games are built around the promise that we can always try again. Lose the match... start over. Get eliminated... respawn. Meanwhile, his own restaurant sat practically empty while he dedicated enormous amounts of energy to trying to steal someone else's secret. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere's something surprisingly human hiding underneath that joke. Sometimes we become so obsessed with what somebody else has that we stop asking what we could build ourselves. We compare careers, money, talent, relationships, followers, recognition, and success. Eventually, another person's life can become the measuring stick we use to determine whether our own is good enough.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePlankton rarely needed a better plan to steal the Krabby Patty formula. Maybe he needed to stop looking across the street.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn this painting, I imagined what happens when all the chasing finally ends... The schemes are over. The restaurant is empty. The property has been taped off like a forgotten crime scene, and the evidence of a lifetime spent pursuing somebody else's success has been left exactly where it fell.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMaybe that was the real crime... Not failing. Not having an empty restaurant. Sometimes we don't even want to change anything. We'd just like to return for five minutes and experience something again while knowing how much it would someday mean to us.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe DeLorean makes that impossible desire feel almost reachable. Get the machine moving fast enough, choose a date, and suddenly the past isn't gone anymore.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis painting imagines that machine lost in time. The doors are open, but the engine wont start anymore. The destination can still be entered, but there is no way to get there. Very few characters have ever possessed more freedom to leave.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBut maybe being able to leave isn't the same as being free.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI think human beings have always been remarkable good at finding ways to escape themselves. Some of us work constantly. Some drink. Some use drugs. Some chase money, sex, attention, achievement, entertainment, relationships, or the next great adventure. We change jobs. We change cities. We change partners. We reinvent ourselves. We convince ourselves that whatever we're feeling might disappear if we can just get far enough away from where we felt it. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMost of us can't travel to another dimension... but we find our own sort of portals to escape through.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMaybe that's what the beer cans spilling out of this abandoned spaceship make me think about. For all the impossible places that machine could reach, it could never take the person sitting inside of it somewhere he didn't have to be himself.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYou can cross the universe and bring your pain with you.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYou can discover things nobody else understands, become smarter than everyone around you, convince yourself that nothing matters, and build enough armor around your emotions that nobody can get close enough to hurt you... None of those things necessarily heal whatever made you want to escape in the first place.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEventually, you have to land somewhere. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMaybe this is what happens when the escaping finally stops. The machine is broken. The alcohol is all gone. Nature is starting to reclaim something that once felt almost impossibly powerful.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAnd maybe that's the tragedy hidden inside all that freedom: there can always be another destination without there ever being a home.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn this painting, time as maybe finally stopped moving and started to take its natural course. From the outside, it was a superhero headquarters filled with technology, training rooms, alarms, and everything necessary to protect a city... but inside, it often felt much more like a house full of kids trying to figure out who they were.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThey fought villains together, but they also fought with each other. They ate pizza, played video games, told jokes, got jealous, fell in love, made mistakes, hurt each other, forgave each other, and somehow became a family despite being incredibly different people. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is long after that chapter ended. The alarms have stopped. The training room is empty. Nobody is arguing over the television. Nobody is sitting on the couch. There are no footsteps in the hallway and no voices coming from the other room. The building is still there, but its just not the same place without the souls that used to fill it. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI think most of us have a place like that somewhere in our lives. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMaybe it was a childhood home, a college apartment, a first workplace, a studio, a friend's basement, or some terrible little rental house we could barely afford. At the time, it was simply where life was happening. We rarely understood that we were inside a chapter that we would one day miss. There were people we saw so often that it seemed impossible to imagine not knowing what they were doing every day.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThen everybody started becoming themselves.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat's one of the contradictions of growing up... These weren't fully formed heroes who happened to share a headquarters. They were young people becoming themselves beside one another. They witnessed versions of each other that the rest of the world would never know. We understand them one way when we're young, and then years later we return to them and realize they were telling us something much bigger all along. Toy Story has always been one of those stories for me.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs a kid, I saw a movie about toys coming to life when nobody was looking. I saw friendship, adventure, jealousy, spaceships, moving vans, claw machines, and a beat-up pizza delivery truck helping carry Woody and Buzz back toward the kid they belonged to. The older I get, the more I realize that underneath all of that was a story about something much more difficult: loving things we know we cannot keep forever.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWoody spends so much of the story terrified of being replaced. Buzz has to confront the painful realization that he isn't who he believed himself to be. Again and again, these characters are forced to face changes they did't ask for. New toys arrive... Families move... Children grow up... Bedrooms empty... and eventually, the people who once couldn't imagine life without us learn how to continue living without us.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI think that's what growing up actually feels like.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe spend the beginning of our lives being carried towards things. Toward friendships, experiences, dreams, people, and places we are certain will always be part of us. Then, somewhere along the way, life begins carrying us away from them. The childhood bedroom becomes somebody else's room. Friends we once saw every day become people we occasionally think about. Parents get older. Children grow up. Houses are sold. Toys disappear into boxes. Sometimes we don't even realize a chapter of our lives has ended until we're already far enough away to miss it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI think that's one of the hardest things I learned from Toy Story: being important to someone doesn't guarantee that you'll always occupy the same place in their life. Sometimes people are meant to carry each other through a particualr chapter. Sometimes loving someone means accepting that their life is supposed to keep moving, even when that movement eventually takes them somewhere you can't follow. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBeing left behind doesn't always mean you didn't matter.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAndy growing up doesn't erase the years Woody spent beside him. A toy sitting untouched in a box doesn't erase the adventures imagined with it. A friendship changing doesn't erase the years when that person was your entire world. An ending doesn't reach backward through time and make everything that came before it meaningless.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThats why I wanted to leave this truck here.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLike many other pieces in my Abandoned Collection, this painting let time touch something that our memories would have preferred to keep preserved. But with this one, I think I see much more than just an abandoned vehicle. Yet every morning, Bob came downstairs and tried again.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI think there's something beautiful about that.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe usually hear about dreams after they succeed. We hear about the business that became an empire, the artist who became famous, or the idea that eventually changed someone's life. We rarely romanticize the years when the dream is barely working... when you're exhausted, the money isn't there, nobody seems to care yet, and you keep showing up anyway.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBob's restaurant always felt like that kind of dream to me. It wasn't impressive because it was enormously successful. It was meaningful because it mattered enormously to the person trying to keep it alive. Bob cared about making good food. He cared about the restaurant. Somewhere between the bills, arguments, strange customers, and the Burger of the Day, his family became part of the dream too.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBut what about after the grill goes cold... the stools stay empty... the Burger of the Day board freezes on some old idea... the arguments stop coming from behind the counter... Linda stops singing... What happens when there aren't any kids turning an ordinary work day into complete chaos? For the first time, the little restaurant that always seemed to be fighting to survive has finally stopped trying.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere's something more heartbreaking about an abandoned family business because you're not only looking at an empty building. Your looking at evidence that somebody once believed in something there... they signed a lease, they bought equipment, they painted the walls, turned on the lights, unlocked the door, and hoped enough people would walk through it to make tomorrow possible.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAnd sometimes the dream works; sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes it works for twenty or thirty or fifty years and then simply reaches its end. Maybe the children grew up and choose lives of their own. Beneath all of the ridiculous plans, scams, arguments, and attempts to impress each other are often much simpler desires we don't yet know how to explain. We want to belong. Eventually, we realize how much energy we spent trying to convince other people who we were. We wanted the right clothes, the right friends, the right reputation. We exaggerated ourselves. A place where superheroes could become little girls again. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHere, Professor Utonium wasn't just the scientist who accidentally created three extraordinary beings... he was Dad.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis was where there were three bedrooms, meals, arguments, bedtime, ordinary conversations, and all of the small moments that make a family feel like a family. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eUnfortunately, this painting lost track of time... \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe city no longer needs saving... the girls have grown up and gone somewhere else... For many, it represents a beloved television show, childhood memories, and one of the most recognizable cars ever put on television.
